Post #10: Zero Sight: Bad Call

Hello my lovelies!

Today I want to talk to you about a really cool short film called Zero Sight: Bad Call. I was contacted by the lovely group of women who created it and they asked me to watch it. I did, and it was great!

Great, huh?

If you didn’t watch it, basically it’s about this gamer Veronica who is suddenly finds herself with great power in her hands. She steals a cell phone which has the power to kill people with a simple text message! I won’t give any more away because I don’t want to spoil it, but I will say that it’s definitely great!

One thing that I love about this short film is that it shows a female gamer in a good light. She’s not masculine or overly aggressive, but she’s not over-feminized or trivialized either. Because the women who created this film are gamers themselves, they respect female gamers and make a point not to make Veronica, or anyone else for that matter, merely an object or a sex symbol. That doesn’t mean Veronica as a character can’t be attractive; it just means that’s not the main point of her character. That’s what I like about this film. Rather than making it about the fact that she’s a girl, she just happens to be a gamer girl who also happens to be a badass!

In short, I think this is a great short film that respects the genre and is tons of fun! These ladies have done an amazing job with it and I can’t wait to see more from them! I definitely recommend you check it out!

P.S. Zero Sight: Bad Call is a Stage 5 TV production and is part of their Continuum Channel. Used with permission. A big thanks to Paige and Liz for contacting me!

Post #9: Gamer Girl Writer Wanted!

Hello lovelies!

As some of you may know, I’m trying to revamp and this site and my radio show! For this reason, I’ve decided that I want to bring on another gamer girl contributor to work with NightHawk42 (who’ll be back soon!).

As many of you know, I have never been good at video games, so I am looking for a gamer girl contributor to do one post every two weeks on the site. You would work with NightHawk42 and myself to bring the readers really great information about relationships, gaming, and being a gamer girl. Sometimes you would have specific writing assignments, but other times you would be able to write about whatever you want! This is an unpaid position, but it would provide great exposure and it would be tons of fun! Plus, you may also be able to help me host my radio show, which is loosely connected to the blog! I really think this blog could be big, and I would love to start building a great team of writers. 🙂

If you’re interested in writing, send your name, your pen name (if you want to use one), a picture (for the site if you’re chosen), and a two paragraph writing sample to domesticmajestic@gmail.com. The sample can just be a quick review of a game you like! If I like your application, I will email you back with more details!

Thanks! And tell your friends! 🙂

THE DEADLINE IS TOMORROW AT MIDNIGHT EST!! It would be longer but I need someone by Friday! 🙂 If you have special circumstances though, email me and I will try to work something out with you!

June: A New Beginning

Hello my lovelies!

I just wanted to apologize to you all for not updating! With finals and starting the podcast, as well as being locked out of my email for this site, things had gotten a little crazy. However, as the title suggests this June is going to be a new beginning for us! I am going to develop a weekly update schedule so that there aren’t any more gaps where I don’t update.

I’m also going to start branching out a bit more and including more posts about relationships in general. Don’t worry, my focus will still be on dating a gamer, I’m just going to expand my reach a bit by covering other pieces of relationships. Gamers are people too, so it would be silly to assume that every minute of dating a gamer is centered around his gaming! (And if it is, dump that sucker!)

I’m also going to keep updating my podcast, College Girl Uncensored! This podcast is mainly about sexuality and sexual health, but it also covers relationships! This means that I can answers your questions in more than one format! If you wanna listen to this podcast, you can find it at http://www.blogtalkradio.com/collegegirluncensored

Well, I think that’s all for this post! Again, I apologize for the delay but I want you all to know that I have never been more dedicated to this site and to you! I think we have some exciting things in the future and I hope you’ll continue to read, listen, and tell your friends!

Do you wish I would just shut up and stop asking you what you think write more Lowdowns? Do you want to hear more about my personal relationship experiences? I’m actually studying couples and sex therapy, so do you guys want advice?

Anyway, I’m literally open to anything! Ask anything you want to know, including but not limited to:

Post #6: Top 5 Gifts For Your Gamer Guy

Img13744.tif

Photocred to PC gamer!

Happy Holidays, trollmates! I’m sure you’ve all been spending time with friends and family and rejoicing over copious amounts of food! I know I have!

So, as we’re going into the holiday season, the question on all of your minds is probably “When will he propose already?” “What should I get my gamer for Christmas?” Well, ladies, here I have the answer to your question! Gamer guys are incredibly hard to buy for, but never fear! DomesticMajestic has a list to end your holiday humbugs!

1. Games!

You and I both know that there’s nothing your man loves more than games! (Well, aside from YOU of course!) So why not see what kind of games he’s into (and what games he already has) and buy him one or two. Not only does this show that you’re good with his gamer ways, it also shows that you listen when he tells you about his games, and that you can do your research; Remember, not all games are created equal, so if you’re going to buy your gamer any games, you need to do your research. You can’t just buy him a random game (or, God forbid, a “girlie game”) especially if he’s a well-versed gamer. So, if he likes zombie games, do your research and find out the newest, best zombie games. This can be done with any type of game (first person shooter, RPG, etc). Not sure what kind of game your man likes? Check out this post by NightHawk42 to see the different types of games and to figure it out!

Note: Make SURE your man doesn’t have the game before you buy it! You want the gift to be memorable, not a return!

2. Game Memorabilia

Every guy has a favorite game. Whether it’s Halo, Minecraft, WoW, or anything else, getting him game memorabilia is a great gift! Memorabilia can literally be anything: a shirt, a plushie, a poster, anything! Almost every game has it’s own store online. If it doesn’t though, there’s always places like eBay and Hot Topic that sell game memorabilia, especially tee shirts, which are always an amazing gift! As a matter of fact, my boyfriend’s Christmas present comes from this category! (I won’t tell you what it is though because he’ll probably read this!) This category is especially good for ladies who don’t wanna spend a lot of money on a gift! Sales are your friend ladies, and this category is the one that’ll have some great deals! He’ll probably love whatever you get him, and there’s not a lot of guesswork so long as you know what game he likes. Plus, Hot Tpic is actually having a 20% off sale right now! Here’s the link to their gamer stuff: http://www.hottopic.com/hottopic/PopCulture/Gamer.jsp

3. GameFly Membership

If your guy gets tired of games easily, or loves a TON of different games, this if a great gift! Basically, you can pay for a certain amount of time, and that gives your guy a membership to GameFly. It’s a lot like Netflix, but for video games! Here’s some information about it straight from the site:

“For one flat monthly fee of $22.95 (plus any applicable tax), GameFly lets you rent 2 games at a time, with free shipping, no due dates, no late fees, and Unlimited PC Play. Or, for $15.95 a month (plus any applicable tax), you can rent one game at a time. There are no additional charges.”

Although it is a little bit of a price commitment, if you know your guy is giving you a gorgeous expensive present, this might be the way to go. Not only will he really appreciate it, but it’ll keep him occupied during the Christmas season!

4. Headphones/Earbuds/Headset

I gave my boyfriend headphones as a gift once before, and he really enjoyed them! There are so many great brands of headphones that aren’t super expensive. I got my boyfriend SkullCandy Hesh headphones last year, and he uses them all the time now! They were only about 30 bucks, but they’re something that he gets a ton of use out of! He listens to music with them and he uses them for when he plays games on his laptop. Headphones are always a great gift because every guy can use them. This is an especially good gift if your man likes to play video games with other people. In that case, a headset or headphones with a mic can be an awesome, decently inexpensive gift that he’ll love!

5. DVD Box Set

Maybe you wanna get your man something that’s not game related this Christmas. Well ladies, if that’s true, a DVD box set is the way to go! Most guys so are into nerd culture have at least one TV show they love, be it Dr. Who, Fringe, Lost, or any other show he likes. A few of my personal favorites that your guy might like:

30 Rock. This is like my favorite show, and it’s something you could watch with him!

Always Sunny in Philadelphia. This show is hilarious, especially if your man is the sarcastic cynic like mine.

Fringe. This show is great for guys who like science fiction.

MarbleHornets. While this isn’t a television show, you can buy the boxed set of all the videos on their website. I mean, it’s Slenderman!

The Walking Dead. Zombies. ‘Nuff said.

Alright ladies, there you have it! A list of 5 great gifts that your gamer guy will love! Happy holidays, trollmates, and stay tuned!

Something I left out? Comment or email me at domesticmajestic@gmail.com! For more information on what to get your gamer, click on the image at the top of this post or click here to see PC gamer’s guide to gifts!

Happy holidays, trollmates! Be safe 🙂

Post #5: Top Questions to Ask (and NOT to ask) Your Gamer Guy

Hey ladies! Sorry it’s taken so long for me to update, but we all know how crazy things can be over Thanksgiving! A day filled with my family yelling at each other about who spilt the gravy love and giving thanks for all we have!

As promised, this post is going to cover questions you can ask your gamer about his gaming and/or nerd culture in general to spark some great conversations. These have worked wonders for me in the past, so I’m sure they’ll work for you too! 🙂 I’m also going to include a few don’ts of conversation starters, because there are a few that will just piss your gamer off. Make sure to avoid those.

This simple guide to questions is sure to help you spark up some interesting conversations with your man, plus asking these questions will let him know that you care. 🙂

Happy reading, and stay tuned for an awesome Christmas themed post!

1. Do ask: “So what is this game about?”

This one is a classic. My boyfriend LOVES when I ask him this question because it makes him feel like a video game god when he can explain a game in detail. Ladies, games no longer consist of simply “you shoot the spaceships”; gamer guys love feeling like they know stuff, so chances are when you ask him this question he’ll be inclined to tell you the background of that game, it’s sequel, and how it’s played. This will be useful later (if you listen to his answer) because you can ask him to clarify on things he says here, which can lead to an even better discussion.

2. Don’t ask: “Are you winning?”

Ladies, this question makes you sound just plain ditsy. This isn’t Mario Cart, trollmates; there’s no first place. Video games now are WAY more complicated than that, and asking him if he’s winning is sure to piss him off. If you’re looking to annoy him, ask this question. If not, just don’t.

3. Do ask: “What are your five favorite video games?”

This question is totally effective. Ladies, if you want your man to talk to you about games for an extended period time, this is the question to ask. Not only will appreciate your curiosity, but he will also greatly enjoy talking enumerating these games. It shows him that you’re interested and again, if you listen, you’ll gain some valuable information that can be helpful later in coming up with more questions.

4. Don’t ask: “What’s so great about this anyway?”

Ladies, this question is wrong on SO many levels! Not only does it imply that your guy shouldn’t be playing video games at all (which is enough to make him roll his eyes), it also sounds like you don’t plan on listening to his answer! The number one thing you must do in order to maintain any relationship is LISTEN! Whether you’re dating a gamer, an Internet junkie, a nerd, a jock, a punk, an emo, or even just a human person, communication is the KEY to a successful relationship! How can you expect him to listen to stories about your day if you don’t take any interest in what he has to say?

5. Do ask: “What do you like about this particular game?”

This question is always a good one. It’s sweet, simple, and to the point, but it’s bound to get a great response. By asking this question, trollmates, you show your gamer that you’re interested in what he has to say, and that you know that there’s more than one type of game out there, and different reasons for liking them. That’s really important, because it lets him know that you care. Plus, it’s never a bad thing when your man looks forward to explaining something to you.

So there you have it, my lovely ladies! You are now officially trained in the art of asking your gamer questions!

Remember, these can always be applied to different things, like a certain website or piece of Internet culture. If your man is in into Naruto or some other “nerd thing” that’s not a game, you can simply apply the questions to that. All trollmates can use this kind of advice and I’m so happy to supply it!

Happy holidays, and stay tuned for a Gamer Guy Gift Guide!

The Lowdown #2: Bronies

Well, my lovely trollmates, we are at almost 2,000 views! We’ve come a long way, and I know we’re only going to continue to grow!

Now, it has been a LONG time since I’ve posted, and you’re probably wondering why. Well, if you’ve been following this blog on Twitter @trollmatesunite, you know that I have been working tirelessly to write guest posts for other blogs in order to fully promote this blog! I want this to be big, and I want our community to keep on growing!

But now to answer the question that’s probably on all of your minds: What the hell is brony?

There comes a day in a trollmates life when she (or he) encounters their first brony. Maybe he’s a friend. Maybe he’s a boyfriend. Maybe your just encountering it now for the very first time. Magical, isn’t it?

Well, if you noticed the picture at the top of this post, you should have an inkling as to what a brony is. So here’s the definition from the trollmate dictionary.

Brony: (noun) A grown ass man who likes the show My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic.

I’m sure you’re totally confused right now. It’s a hard concept to wrap your mind around, but it’s EXTREMELY popular with internet trolls and gamer guys, so it’s VITAL that you know a little bit about this fandom.

When I first heard of bronies, I was very VERY weirded out. I mean, grown men obsessing over ponies? Magical ponies? So in order to write an informed article for this blog, I watched a few episodes.

The show is basically about a pony, Twilight Sparkle, who is smart and bookish. She lives is Equestria, where there are many different varieties of ponies, and they experience mishaps and such. Like any show aimed at young girls, this show is cute and musical; there are tons of colors and funny little lines. Every pony has a distinct personality, and distinct skills, that a little girl could relate to. It teaches some good lessons too; Twilight Sparkle and her friends constantly use friendship and life skills to combat things like evil and being a bad friend. Overall, it’s a cute show, but not necessarily something I would watch habitually.

But why do teenage to grown men enjoy this show so much? Like I said, I interviewed a few bronies from my hometown, who shed a little light on the subject.

Jerod, the leader of a brony club at a local high school, insisted that liking My Little Pony was “just like being a fan of any other TV show” and told me that bronies simply enjoy the world of the show. He also insisted that bronies are “just like fans of any other show, except the show they like isn’t necessarily for their age or gender”.

Like I said, I interviewed a couple other bronies as well. While talking with them, it was clear that they had faced much adversity because of their television preference, many of them referencing being called hipters and child molesters. Sucks, right? I mean, what if people thought that me watching Toddlers and Tiaras made me a child molester? That’s not okay.

Basically, they like it because it makes them happy. I mean, it’s cute and you really can’t help but smile when you watch it. Yeah, maybe it’s not super age or gender appropriate, but it can’t be all bad. I mean, TONS of people like it; they literally have websites dedicated to it. One such site is Equestria Daily. Anyway, the fandom is incredibly diverse, and the show is actually really popular, believe it or not. Long story short:

Bronies are everywhere. Especially if you’re a trollmate. Why? Because your average guy on the street hasn’t been exposed to My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic, and if he was, he would automatically regard it as “gay” or “stupid”. But we trollmates know better. Our guys like some weird stuff, because they’re constantly exposed to new and interesting things. Forums, youtube, /b/, reddit… The idea of bronies is incredibly widespread on the internet. There is now a pony board on 4chan, which is a huge deal! There are entire sites dedicated to this stuff! Much like any other fandom, the fans are OBSESSED.

So, what’s the real lowdown? Well, ladies, it’s important for you to remember that bronies are people too. Yeah, maybe they like something that you don’t like, and yeah, maybe it’s not necessarily geared toward their age group, but having your man like My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic is better than having him like crocs, violence, or Gossip Girl. Yeah, a dude who likes My Little Pony might be gay, but so might a guy who likes motorcycles. Every guy has some type of “feminine” thing that they like. Besides, who decides what’s gender correct anyway? Society, that’s who. Well, I challenge society, because if everyone believe that friendship was magical, there’d be a hell of a lot less war going on, and Congress might be able to get something passed for once.

Ladies, being a brony isn’t a bad thing! It’s just like having a man who likes one particular game or piece of internet culture. Yeah, it’s a little quirky, but it’s certainly not the end of the world. Besides, bronies are nice guys! Don’t write off a guy who’s a brony simply because he likes that show. Write him off because he’s a dick, if he is. If not, give him a chance! He clearly empathizes with small animals, and you know he’d be great with kids!

For more information on Bronies and why they exist, check out this article!

Well, that’s my brony post! Have any questions or thoughts? Something I didn’t include? Are YOU (or is YOUR man) a brony who wants to be heard? Feel free to email me at domesticmajestic@gmail.com, and PLEASE comment on this post! I love hearing your thoughts. 🙂

~ ❤ ~

Taylor

P.S. Bronies can be girls too! Sometimes referred to as a “pega-sister”, girls can love this show just as much as guys do, even if they’re grown adults.

Photocred to knowyourmeme and quickmeme. Also to Hasbro and the Hub, as I don’t own My Little Pony by any means.

Hey there, Trollmates! 🙂

Sorry I haven’t updated this week! I have been so very busy this week eating pizza rolls  coming up with ideas for articles and even writing some guests posts, which will bring even more trollmates to our community!

Today though, I’m dedicating this post to my amazing boyfriend!

“But Taylor!” You might be wondering, “Why the hell should we care about your life?”

Well, ladies (and gents), you should care because I am living proof that a non-gamer to gamer relationship can work and be strong, so long as you work at it! Even more than that, it’s to share with you my story so that you know I’m not some random foreveralone person who knows nothing about relationships. I have one, a great one. And that’s why I made this blog.

So, today is my two year anniversary with my boyfriend! He and I, as the title suggests, are trollmates for real, and two years is a big deal for us! So to celebrate, I want to share some things with you that I’ve found extremely helpful in making our relationship last.

That brings us to the topic of today’s post:

  • Rule Number Two: Ask Questions

Last summer, my boyfriend and I went through a really rough patch that called our whole relationship into question. Sometimes we felt like we simply had nothing to talk about, that we had settled into a routine and couldn’t get out of it.

That’s when we learned to ask questions. I don’t mean, “Why didn’t you call me?!” type questions. I mean questions about each other, and about the things we love. This is especially true for a gamer to non-gamer relationship; Gamers LOVE to talk about their games! But more importantly, they love that you care enough to want to learn. Which means you need to also follow this:

  • Rule Number Three: Listen to the Answers

Ladies, asking questions isn’t going to help your relationship if you aren’t interested in hearing the answer! If you really want to make it work with someone, you have to be interested in the things that they care about! Now, that doesn’t mean you have to sit and play Guild Wars 2 for a few hours and become a fan of it; it just means that you like/love/care about the other person enough to hear what they have to say. Personally, it makes me feel really great when I listen to my gamer guy talk about games that he likes. It makes me feel like I can share in that part of his life, even though games aren’t really my thing. In fact, the idea of sitting at a computer for hours on end playing with 8 bit blocks sounds like my own personal version of hell. But hey, my man loves minecraft. I love the idea of marriage. Sometimes you just don’t agree. But that doesn’t mean we can’t have an amazing relationship! We just have to compromise, and become interested in the things the other likes.

So, long story short, he and I made it to two years, and I truly believe we’re in it for the long haul. Only time will tell, but I love him from the bottom of my heart, and I’m confident that I will forever have things to post on this blog, because he and I will always be together. 🙂

A cheesy tangent, I know, but hey! It only happens once a year, so cut me some slack!

Trollmates, continue to stay tuned! Within the next few days I will be posting a list of the top questions to ask your boyfriend about gaming, so if you found this post helpful, follow us @trollmatesunite to see when that next post goes live! Trust me, you will definitely want to read it, because it will be SUPER helpful, and they will all be questions I have ACTUALLY used to spark conversations (and closeness!) with my gamer guy. Because, let’s be real ladies: Sometimes you have no idea what he’s talking about, but don’t want to 4 hour explanation of something you really didn’t care about in the first place. I totally have you covered!

Like I said, there’s some really exciting announcements and things coming, so stay tuned! Keep coming back, keep showing your friends! Like us on facebook by either clicking “like” on the side of the blog or visiting our page. Comment, like, email me! I love suggestions!

Stay safe if you’re going to be affected by Hurricane Sandy!

The Lowdown #1: Slenderman

Hey there, my lovely trollmates!

Sorry it’s taken me so long to update! My school was on Fall Break, so I was away from my computer watching Mean Girls over and over spending time with my family.

Anyway, as you can probably tell, I’m going to be starting a new type of post! It’s called The Lowdown, and it’s going to be posts that focus on one particular piece of internet culture or gaming, like a particular game, meme, or idea.

For this particular post, our topic is Slenderman.

Now, some of you may have heard of Slenderman via the game Slender. While this isn’t the first time Slenderman has appeared within internet or gamer culture, this game has increased this creature’s popularity by a lot.

For those of you who don’t know, here’s a little background information on Slenderman:

Once upon a July on 2009, the forum Something Awful had a “Create Paranormal Images” type contest/competition. Somebody posted this picture:

Freaky, right?

and Slenderman was born! Since then, Slenderman has become really popular within stories and Creepypasta. Visit the Trollmate Vocabulary post for my explanation of Creepypasta.

But here’s some information on the actual mythos of Slenderman:

  • As you can probably tell from the above picture, the Slenderman is said to usually hang around kids.
  • Slenderman has no face.
  • Slenderman wears a suit, complete with the tie.
  • Slenderman has long tentacle-like arms.
  • The Slenderman is said to inhabit heavily wooded areas.
  • Legend has it that Slenderman will stalk you until you slowly go insane.
  • If he stalks you, you may start to black out, feel nauseous, and lose track of time, among other things.
  • Some believe that Slenderman can teleport, or use the 4th dimension to travel. Others think that he simply remains completely still while you are looking, and walks fast (due to his long legs) while you are turned around. Either way, it’s a terrifying concept.

Now, pretty much like the day after Slenderman was created (or pretty close to that), MarbleHornets was created. MarbleHornets is basically a youtube channel paired with a Twitter that basically follows the story of a guy named Jay and a movie his friend Alex was making. To watch MarbleHornets, visit the Youtube channel and watch the videos and follow @marblehornets on Twitter! The story’s scary, but it’s addictive!

Slenderman (the Operator) as depicted in MarbleHornets

Now let’s cover the most recent obsession of Slenderfans: Slender.

As MarbleHornets started to gain popularity (it’s in its final season now), Slenderman became more and more popular. Because Slenderman was getting so popular, the game Slender was created. Parsec Productions basically made the game, which has the full name “Slender: The Eight Pages”. Pretty much what you do is navigate through a landscape and find 8 pages about Slenderman, while trying to avoid him. You have a flashlight and navigate through this creepy landscape, some of which is old buildings or dark woods, and look for the pages. You have to collect them all without Slenderman getting you, so pretty much you turn around and your little flashlight can sometimes show him standing there. The creators are now working on an even more advance version, but many people really like this one because even though there’s pretty limited gameplay, Slenderman never appears in the same place, so it’s not like you can avoid him.

This game has gained a HUGE amount of popularity. It is free to download, and because of the simple storyline and design, you don’t have to be a hardcore gamer to have fun playing it. If you love jumpscares and you’re interested in a little scary fun, I recommend you download Slender.

A screencap from Slender.

Besides Slender, there are tons upon tons of stories and memes about Slenderman; he’s very popular. MJDarklighter has a really freaky story called Slender Spot that is definitely worth reading. There are multitudes of documentaries and short films on Slenderman, but The Slender Man Documentary is a short scary one.

There’s also a lot of parodies of Slenderman, for instance, the idea that he only stalks you because “Gimme 20 Dollahs”. This one is my personal favorite, because it takes an actual MarbleHornets entry and makes fun of it. Beware though, the footage is pretty scary, but with the music it basically counteracts it.

Slenderman vs. Gangnam Style, featured below, is a great example of how popular Slenderman is and what Slenderman represents; no matter what the current viral videos or trends are, Slenderman will find his way into them. People love Slenderman, and ladies, if your man loves Slenderman, don’t pretend for 2 seconds that he isn’t going to try and suck you into the vortex of Slenderfandom too.

Personally, I really like Slenderman, especially MarbleHornets. While I’m really bad with jump scares (it doesn’t matter what’s jumping out; it could be a fluffy unicorn shitting rainbows and I would still jump if it popped out), my boyfriend absolutely loves the game Slender, and has actually downloaded the game via the Android market onto his phone. He plays it pretty much all the time, so I guess it gets the Boyfriend Stamp of Approval!

Okay trollmates, I know some of you may be asking, “Why Slenderman as a first post?” Well, ladies, Slederman is something that is quickly gaining popularity. In order to date somebody who’s keeping up with these trends, you too need to be aware of it. If your man loves Slender or Slenderman, you at least need to know the basics of what he’s talking about! To keep a relationship alive, there’s got to be communication, INTERESTING communication. What better way to have an interesting conversation with your man than to say “hey, so I saw this hilarious Slenderman video today”… chances are he’ll be WAY impressed that you recognize Slenderman. Plus, my boyfriend and I watch MarbleHornets together, and it’s hours upon hours of scary suspenseful fun! My boyfriend loves horror movies, but I can’t stand gore, so MarbleHornets is a really good compromise for us, because it has all the suspense with little to no blood! 🙂
